Do you love candies? Here is one of the most sumptuous appetizers for young and old alike. Learn how to make this great and easy recipe right here! It just takes about 30 minutes for this yummy dish to be served on a platter.
Ingredients to Prepare Candied Walnuts
Walnut halves – 1 pound
White sugar – 1 cup
Cinnamon – 2 teaspoons and freshly ground
Salt – ¼ teaspoon or according to taste
Milk -6 tablespoons
Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
Method to Prepare Candied Walnuts
First, you need to set your oven to 175 degrees centigrade or at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Take a baking sheet and spread walnuts on it in a single layer. Begin roasting it for about 10 minutes or until the nuts change colour to slightly brown. However, be careful that nuts are not excessively heated.
For making the sugar syrup, take a pan and mix together cinnamon, sugar, milk and salt properly. Cook this over medium flame for about 8 minutes. In some time, you will notice that the mixture is changing into small soft balls; at this point, you should remove it from the gas oven and immediately mix in the vanilla extract. You may need a candy thermometer for checking soft balls. If you do not have a thermometer, then you will have to continuously check for softball stage, for it just takes 30 seconds for soft balls to turn into hard balls. So, you should be really quick in doing so and very careful as well.
Then add walnuts to sugar syrup and blend so that it coats well. Take waxed paper and dollop nuts onto it. Then, at once separate nuts with a fork. Finally cool this delicious recipe and store it.
Tips:
To add more zing to the taste, you can even add a bit of cayenne pepper to the sugar syrup.
If you are calorie conscious, then you can use soy milk instead of full cream milk. It will also give you the same great taste, but deduct the calories from the recipe.
While storing, you should ensure that you are putting it in airtight container, for your cabinet may pick the strong flavor of cinnamon.
Instead of walnuts, you can even use pecans. This recipe will taste yummy when paired with dried cranberries or baby greens. In fact, it makes for a wonderful salad topping as well.
