When my husband quit his mediocre job for a year to pursue his Master’s degree… one nosy woman asked me, â??What are you going to do? You cannot live on love!â? Embarrassed, I mumbled some reply.

What I should have done was to paste a smile on my face, kindly say something like, â??As long as we do not ask you for money is it any of your business how we live?â?

Yes, it IS possible to live on love.

Here are some tips and techniques that I have found useful when you are â??living on loveâ?.

Be in love.

Your marriage vows were â??for better or worse, for richer or poorerâ?. Tough times are hard for both of you. Better times are ahead. If you weather the bad times together and with a good and loving attitude, you will enjoy the future richer times so much better. Determine that you will be supportive, encouraging and loving to your spouse.

Plant a Money Tree.

I once worked for a retired store owner. He believed that there was such a thing as a â??moneyâ? tree. He had one. His advice was, â??You have to fertilize it wellâ?. Learn how to save for the tough times. If you save only 10% of the gross of your paycheck, you will be prepared in times of financial stress.

Live Simply.

When your income is reducedâ??reduce your wants and reevaluate your needs. If you don’t need something, determine that you will not want it. If you really need something, determine just how much you really need it. Buy it only if you have the cash to pay for it in full.

Count Your Blessings!

During a time of great financial stress, I reflected on all of my blessings. I realized that although financially I had very little, I was rich in the things that really mattered. Money helps, but there are things such as love, family, heath, money cannot buy. When you take the time to reflect on all of your non-monetary blessings, you realize how rich you really are.

Invest in Your Health.

Your health is a priceless gift. Once your health is gone, no medicine can restore it completely. You need to be healthy, but especially so in times of financial stress. To eat healthy, and save money, avoid expensive processed foods. Rather buy produce and meats from local sources, freeze or can for future use. You will be getting valuable nutrition at the best prices. Make daily exercise a health priority. If you smoke, quit. You will save money and be healthier.

Start Your Own Business.

Having your own business is a wonderful way to generate another income stream. Pretend that you cannot fail,do some research, then work your business. A home based business may be just what you need to help your through difficult financial times. It may grow to become your only business. Do be careful, while there are many legitimate ways to earn money and be your own boss, there are also many people looking to take advance of well intentioned entrepreneurs.

Using these tips you can smile and smugly answer nosy questions with something like, â??You can live on love when you know howâ?.
